he hype is real with this one. I know I’m late to the game, but I’ve now joined the hoards of Dune fans after finishing perhaps the best sci-fi book I’ve ever read. With this category of fiction in particular, I often struggle with the learning curve presented in the first few pages of a new novel. It’s an almost impossible task for a sci-fi author to setup a new world in a way that can be comprehended by a mass audience, but that’s exactly what Frank Herbert accomplished with the first piece of his six-part Dune anthology.

From the first page I was captivated by the detail of the narrative. The way he provides consumable pieces that establish a foundation for each phase of the book. He creatively repeats critical elements in new ways, to engrain aspects of the world that are important for the reader to grasp later in the story. The collection of those pieces end up producing a novel that I will surely read again, and one that I can’t wait to see as a film later this year.
